This was the last Euro for West Germany alone, as the team was united in the following one. The team topped the group over Italy, Spain, and Denmark, mostly thanks to goals from Jurgen Klinsmann. However, the West Germans fell to the Dutch when Marco van Basten, one of the best strikers of his generation and ever, scored the winner for the Netherlands in the 88th minute to make it 2-1, and lead the Netherlands to the final where they beat the Soviet Union 2-0.
The 1990 World Cup in Italy saw Germany win the trophy in a first-ever World Cup final rematch when they faced Argentina. West Germany took the win in this classic 1990 shirt with Brehme’s late penalty, in the 85th minute. It was a 1-0 win and is often referred to as one of the ugliest final matches of all times. Argentina conceded two red cards, and the West Germans avoided the punishments even though they played very strong and physical football.
A notable player from the final was Guido Buchwald, who tightly man-marked Maradona for basically the whole match. This prompted frustration from both Maradona and the rest of the Argentinians, and without the activity of their start player, the Argentine team couldn’t string together a single dangerous action, ending the match with just a single shot on Germany’s goal.
Germany’s 1990 World Cup wasn’t easy, though. They had the most issues with England in the Semi-finals, which they beat after a penalty shootout. Andreas Brehme’s performances in this shirt are worth noting as he scored against Netherlands, England, and Argentina… each time when the team deeply needed him.
